Thanksgiving Meal Preparation Workshop
(Any two days you wish between 8-28 November 2013)

       

          Our little green home is getting ready to host cooking workshops for a traditional Thanksgiving meal prepared by Chef Leah along the Northern Aegean coast within the Alexandria Troya (40 km), Assos (22km) and Apollon Smitheon (4km) triangle, 278 km from Izmir, 445 km from Istanbul, located in a little modest village facing the Aegean Sea, surrounded by olive groves and pine forest where you'll enjoy a stress-free get-away in a pristine quiet and natural environment.

- Classes are suitable for all levels from complete beginners to experienced foodies.

- Your Turkish host, Berna, speaks perfect English. Chef Leah, a certified US-trained chef with more than 20 years experience is American, living and working in Turkey for almost 9 years, also speaks Turkish.

- Small, personalized courses on site, any two days you wish between 8-28 November 2013. We can accommodate two to four people at a time in two bedrooms with double bed.

- Kids and pets are welcomed.

-  Please contact us for information about larger groups and while registering, be sure to provide information about bringing kids and pets.

Course Itinerary

-  Cooking classes (3-4 hours), prior to an enjoyable sit down meal of the results!

-  Workshop Day 1: Nice seasonal, hearty soup made with pumpkin, turkey and side dishes; mashed potatoes, stuffing, a nice mix of roasted vegetables, a caesar salad

-  Workshop Day 2: Pumpkin pie and creative different ways to make use of all the leftovers

Class rates
Our classes are TL 500 per person for 2 nights accommodation including breakfast, dinner and workshops.

Booking information

A small deposit is required when you make the reservation. The balance is required 48 hours prior to arrival.  

Option

If you are not interested in the cooking class, just want to hang around, chill, go hiking or biking or swimming or snorkeling, you are still welcome. (We have biking and snorkeling gear for two people available for your use)

Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi Ciktigim uzun yolculugun sonuna geldim nihayet. Umarim gelmisimdir desem daha mi dogru olurdu. Mart 2012'de basladigim maceranin en azindan insaat ile ilgili bolumu bitirmis oldugumu umuyorum. Icerisinde "Ummak" fiili gecen cumleler kurmamin sebebini aciklamam gerekiyor sanirim; evimin tamamlandigini dusunerek tasinip, yerlesip, acilis ve hidirellez partilerinin ardindan evi yeniden toplayip, santiyeye donusturup, iki aylik bir calismadan sonra yeniden "Ev" sekline donmeye calisiyorum. Umarim bu sefer basarmisimdir. Bu aralar evi yeniden kurmaya calismak disinda neler yapiyorum; mumkun oldukca bahcemle ugrasiyorum. Feslegenim ve nanalerim cok mutlu, biberlerim ve domateslerim cok lezzetli. Dort gozle ektigim pembe domateslerin kizarmasini bekliyorum. Bugunki yazimi Mevlana'nin bir siiriyle basladim. Bir sayfayi kapatirken yeni bir sayfa acmak gerekir diye dusunuyorum. Actigim yeni sayfayi henuz ne ile dolduracagimi bilemiyorum, onumu hala pek goremiyorum. Ama durup bekleyecek bir insan degilim. Uretmedende duramiyorum. Urettiklerimi de bir sekilde degerlendirmem gerekiyor. Dun itibariyle urettiklerimi buyuk sehirlerde yasayan, saglikli ve taze yiyeceklere erisimde zorluk yasayan dostlarima erzak kolisi seklinde gondermeye basladim. Sabah erkenden hamuru mayalayip hamurun kabarmasini beklerken tarlaya gidip sebzeleri toplayip, eve donup ekmekleri odun atesi ile isittigim firina atip, ekmekler piserken dostlarima gonderecegim peynirleri zeytinleri vakumlayip ekmekler pistikten sonra kolileri hazirladim ve kasabadan Canakkale'ye gondererek kargonun cikisina yetistirdim. Sabahtan beri kolilerini alan dostlarimin olumlu geri beslemelri ile cok keyif aldim ve o moralle tarladan topladigim domatesleri kurutmak uzere hazirlayip gunese serdim. Suan hedefim kuruttugum domateslerle ekmek yapmak, Hisaronu'nde yasarken en bayildigim seydi o ekmekler. Tabiki butun gunumu calisarak gecirmiyorum. Aksam ustleri kendimi denize atip gunun butun yorgunlugunu Ege'nin serin sularina birakiyorum. Bu keyif anlarini paylasmak uzere sevgili dostlarimi bekliyorum.

Ilk gun/Day one

     Evet, farkindayim, ev suanda timarhane gibi, icerideki pis islerim henuz bitmedigi icin kutulari actirmadim, bu hafta herseyi tamamlayip yavas yavas yerlesmeyi umuyorum. Bugun iskan ile ilgili sinavi gectik. Yasal islemleri tamamlayip birkac gune evime elektrik ve su baglanacak. Benim acimdan en sinir bozucu durum, hala evimde kalamiyorum. 

     Yes, I know, it seems crazy at the moment but since I haven't done with the dirty stuff inside the house yet, I haven't start opening the boxes. Hoping to finish at the end of the week and try settling. Today our house passed the legal inspection which will lead me the next step; applying for electricity. This is the most annoying part, I can't stay in my place yet.

Dolu dizgin bir hafta/ What a crazy week

    

     Yogun bir haftaydi, neler yaptigimi aktarmaya zaman bulamadim. Bugun tum hafta neler yaptigimi ozetleyecek olursak;

      It was a busy week and I didn't have time to write what I've been doing. The work has been done all week is;

Bahcede calismalarimiz devam etti;

We continue organizing the garden;

Mermer doseme isi kaldigi yerden yeni bir usta ve gelen takviye mermerler ile devam etti;

We continued the marble work with a new team;

Percere montaji yapildi;

We installed the windows;

Supurgelik ve denizlik montaji yapildi;

And we did the trims;

Isitma/Heating

     Ekolojik bir ev yaratma dusuncesi ile yola cikmistik. Suana kadar da o prensibe bagli kaldik. Sira evin tesisat islerine geldi. Bugunku konumuz isitma. Daha projenin en basinda gittigim yenilenebilir enerji fuarindan sonra bu konu uzerinde yogunlastim. Yaptigim calismalar sonrasinda sistem olarak "Isi Pompasi" kullanmaya karar verdik. Fosil yakitlarin yakilmasi sonucu ortama sanilan zararli gazlarin cevre ve sagligimiz uzerindeki olumsuz etkileri bertaraf etmek icin boyle bir sistem kurmaya karar verdik. Sistemin ulkemizde yeni olmasindan dolayi kurulum maliyetleri henuz yuksek. Ancak fosil yakit ve petrol urunlerinin fiyatlarinin surekli artis egilimi gosterdigi bu dunyada sistemin birkac yil gibi kisa bir sure zarfida kendini kompanse edecegi de bir gercek. Bu tur sistemlerle ilgili kararlarin erken verilmesinin avantaji insa esnasinda sistemin ihtyac duyacagi alt yapi icin gerekli hazirliklari yapmak. Bunun en basinda da yerden isitma sisteminin kurulumu geliyor. Bu kurulum esnasinda secilen malzemenin niteligi cok onemli; gecmiste kullanilan siradan plastik borularin aksine gunumuzde "Oksijen Bariyerli" borular mevcuttur. Oksijen bariyerli borular sistemin icerisinde dolastirdigimiz suyun icerisinde hava kabarcigi kalmasina engel olarak gelecekte bu hava kabarciklarinin genlesme suretiyle sisteme zarar vermesine engel olmakta ve sistem icerisinde suyun homojen dolasimini saglanmasi sureyitle homojen isinmaya destek olmaktadir.

     Nicin yerden isitma; birinci nedenim gorsel, evin icerisinde radyator gormek istemiyorduk. Ikinci ve ilkinden daha onemli sebep ise verimlilik. Radyator ile isitmada sistemin icerisinde dolastiracaginiz suyun sicakligini 85-90 Derece Santigrat dolaylarinda olmasina ihtiyac varken yerden isitma sistemlerinde dolastiracaginiz suyun sicakliginin 30-35 Derece Santigrat olmasi yeterlidir. Radyatorler evin belirli yerlerinde duvar kenarlarina yerlestirilirken yerden isitma elemanlari evin tamamini kaplayacak sekilde homojen olarak dosenir. Bu da sistemin daha az enerji harcayarak daha cok ve homojen isitma yapmasi anlamina gelir.
     Gelelim yerden isitma sistemin beslenmesine; az evvel "Isi Pompasi" diye bir sistem telaffuz ettim. Nedir bu "Isi Pompasi"? Isi pompasi elektrik enerjisi kullanarak doga ortaminda mevcut enerjiyi dis ortamdan ic ortama tasiyan bir sistemdir. Kisin isitma maksadiyla kullanilabilecegi gibi yazin sogutma maksadiyla kullanilabilinir. Calisma prensibini aciklamanin en kolay yolu evimizde kullandigimiz buzdolabi, klima gibi sistemleri ornek vermek olabilir. Gecmiste sogutma maksadiyla kullanilmis olan bu sistemler gunumuzde ayni prensipten yola cikarak isitma maksadiyla kullanilmaya baslanmistir. Isi pompasi bulundugunuz cevreye gore hava kaynakli, su kaynakli ve toprak kaynakli olabilir. Evimizin bulundugu cografyadan dolayi bizim secimimiz hava kaynakli sistem oldu. Sistem ayni zamanda evin evsel sicak su ihtiyacini da karsilayacak sekilde tasarlandi. Bu sisteme gunes enerjisi panelini entegra ettik ki gunesli gunlerde suyumuzu gunesin yaydigi isiyi kullanarak isitabilelim. Gonlumden gecen isi pompasinin ihtiyac duyacagi elektrik enerjisini de uretmek ancak bu tur sistemlerin maliyetleri hala cok yuksek. Fiyatlarin makul seviyelere indigi ve bu konu hakkinda vergi indirimi, vs. turunde devlet desteginin olacagi gunleri sabirsizlikla bekliyorum.

     We decided to create a green home and heating is one of the most important elements when you think about how we create pollution because of burning petroleum products of fossil products. Even before we started building I went to the "Renewable Energy Exhibition" in Istanbul. I learned a lot about heat pumps and decided to use this system for our place. Combining the system with solar panels so that we make use of the sunny days. We decided floor heating elements for the installation of the system which is more efficient since you only need to heat the water up to 30-35 Degrees Centigrade while you have to heat the water up to 85-90 Degrees Centigrade. Using the pipes with oxygen barrier is the other important issue.
     It may be necessary to explain what heat pump is. It's basically the system carries the energy from outdoors to indoors. Works with the same principal with the refrigerator or the air condition system. By using electricity increases the temperature, heats the water and circulates in the pipe system laid on your floor. The ideal thing is being able to produce the electricity needed to run the system from wind and sun but the system is still expensive. Looking forward to get the systems at a reasonable price.
